October Charity Crochet

Just want to remind you that we are meeting at my house this Monday, October 24, to work on scarves for the Treehouse. The Treehouse serves single mothers with children, in the Wichita area. KS My Stitich July Charity Workshop

Hello! We had our charity workshop at Kaye Gruvers' house and we all had fun edging fleece blankets for the babies of Reading, Kansas and Joplin, Missouri. Here are some of the pictures from the workshop.

I wanted to say a special THANK YOU to all that attended and also my sincere thank you to Linda Cooley's daughter Sharon for providing us with 5 more soft little fleece blankets edged with beautiful crochet.

Stars of the Month for March 2011

Audrey regularly attends the morning meetings for the guild. She is a retired Wichita school teacher. Some of her hobbies other than crochet include gardening (mostly flowers), reading, and watching TV.
She says her nickname is Audie, because her cousin couldn't say Audrey. She learned to crochet 9 years ago when her neighbor taught her the basic stitches. She enjoys making bookmarks, flowers and circles, and appliques for a quilt that has some faded spaces. She is in her second year of membership in KS My Stitch and joined us when she saw an article in the newspaper. One project she recently completed that gives her a sense of pride is an afghan she made. One favorite thing she remembers about guild is that one metting she dropped her cell phone and someone turned it in. She keeps coming to guild because she is interested in new projects and is inspired by seeing others' projects.

Cheryl also regularly attends the morning guild meetings. She is a receptionist at Walmart and takes calls and works the fitting rooms at the store on North Rock Road. Her nickname is Chatter, and she says she got it from CB radio. She has been crocheting since she was 12 but really got back into it about five years ago. She has been a member of KS My Stitch for between two and three years and learned about the guild at Twist. A project that she recently completed that gives her a sense of pride is a lot of hats and scarves she made for a homeless camp in New Jersey for Christmas. One of her favorite things about the guild is her friends sharing their projects. She keeps coming to guild because of friendships and new projects.

Kaye normally attends the morning meetings, but this month she came to the evening meeting too! She is retired and likes to spend her extra time crocheting. Her nickname is Kaye Baby. She has been crocheting since she was nine years old and her grandmother taught her how. She is really enjoying making crochet butterflies like Linda's and took one apart to figure out how to make them! She also enjoys making shawls. She's been a member for a few years now, but doesn't remember how she first heard about the guild. She says any project that gets finished gives her a sense of pride. Her favorite thing about guild is the people and she really loves everything about guild. And it's the people and ideas that keep her coming back, She loves learning new things.

Susan regularly attends the evening meetings because she is a senior administrative assistant in the physics department at Wichita State University and she says she loves her job.

She doesn't have a nickname, but is on Ravelry as stuckonsticks. She has been crocheting since she was about 16. She had really bad eyes and crocheted mainly by feel until she had lasic surgery to correct her eyesight. She went from 20/875 to 20/30! (I think she loves that she can see her beautiful work now!--Cori) She is making afghans, which are her favorite, and also working on shawls for her nieces and some friends for Christmas. She has been a member of the guild for about six or seven years and learned about it from her mother. One project she completed that gives her a sense of pride is a filet crochet banner of a dragon (and it really is beautiful!). It won first place at the State Fair. Susan says she loves everything about the guild especially the people because she finds it hard to make friends. And it's also the people who keep her coming back, that and learning new things about crochet.

April Guild meeting, Monday 4/18/11, at Twist Yarn Shoppe from 10:00 am to Noon and again from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enter through the back door. Keep in mind other businesses are open, use the parking lot for the ball park if needed. Susie Kilgroe will give a program on the popular crochet art of Amigurumi, which is a dense crochet technique used to create animal, character, or dolls. Cori and Pam will be available to help. There are two small animal shape patterns to chose from: Mouse color ideas: Grey, Pink, White, yarn OR get wild and bright. Owlcolor ideas: Tan, Beige, Grey, Black, Yellow, Ivory yarn OR get creative!

You will need the following supplies Bring the color and any weight of yarn you want to use (worsted or DK, Sport) and a hook that is much smaller than the yarn calls for (F, C, E, D, E are recommended to create a small, dense crochet).

Needle and embroidery floss Pink for Mouse, Black for Owl to make details.

Safety eyes

Scissors

Poly fill or 1/2" x 1/2" squares of cut up recycled Tshirts for stuffing.

February Stars of the Month!

Amanda Alessi. Amanda's nick name is Mandi, but only her family calls her that. She was taught to chain crochet when she was young by her grandmother and learned a few years ago viewing YouTube. Currently Amanda is working on her first Afghan for a wedding gift in May. She has been a member of the guild for a year. Her husband came to Twist to buy her a gift certificate and met our Tamara, who told him about the guild. Amanda keeps coming back to the evening meetings for a girls night out. Her favorite memory of the guild was the Christmas Party last year. She has a sense of pride and accomplishment in everything she makes.

Name: Susie Kilgroe
Susie does not have a nick name, but her real name is Tamara. She learned to double crochet when she was younger, but took a class later in life to learn more. She was referred to the guild by someone at the Extension Office where she took the class. Susie has been a member of the guild for 3 years.
Susie is currently working on a funky scarf and will soon start crocheting an alpaca baby blanket for her grandson. She has a sense of pride in anything she finishes and is preparing to teach a crochet class.
Susie loves learning new things and seeing everyone at the meetings and her favorite guild memory would be a toss up between the Christmas White Elephant gift exchange, or the retreat she went on.

Name: Donna Dyer.
Donna's nick name is "chicwithyarn". She is an Instructional Coach at USD 259. Donna crochets and knits. She has been a guild member for 3 years. Donna has a sense of accomplishment and pride in everything she completes. She normally attends the evening meetings, unless school is out, and then she's a morning gal!
She worked feverishly making scarves for the charity event last year, despite a few broken ribs! Donna enjoys the friendships she has made in the guild and also enjoys the Christmas parties.

Name: JoAn Holms

Attends morning and afternoon meetings. JoAn is retired from Department of Family Services in Montana, she loves to garden, sew and watch basketball. JoAn doesn't have a nickname.
She learned to crochet in high school and college from her mother, then just picked it back up about 5 years ago. She enjoys a variety of projects. Her goal is to crochet a lacey shawl. JoAn has been a member of the guild for 2 years. She heard about the guild from Sue Wilkey, who invited her.
She is proud of the 9 baby afghans she crocheted for the 9 new babies in her family, all last year!
Her favorite memory about the guild is the fantastic group of ladies that are welcoming and make new comers feel comfortable right away!
The thing that keeps her coming back to the guild is show 'n tell, new ideas and meeting people who crochet.

This month Stephanie Macera will demonstrate embellishing with scraps of yarn to create a bohemian style scarf.

Please bring a finished scarf (without fringe) to the meeting to embelish.
The following patterns are suggested to create a colorful scarf base.

A: I am retired, I was a stay at home mom and worked in offices and later worked as an RV Park office manager with my late husband.

A: Since 1945, and I was taught both crochet and to knit by my mother when I was about 10. I enjoy and have about the same skill level in both crochet and knit. My mother taught me how to hand wind a center pull ball of yarn when I was young.

A: I like small projects because I am slow. Lately I have made several hexagon baby sweaters.

A: I was part of the original group of 5 women that created the guild. I was guild president in 2007.

A: I used to make my kids sweaters. When they outgrew them, I would unravel the yarn and remake them in a larger size!

A: I love seeing the ongoing process of change. Each year as our officers change, the direction takes a little different turn, I love to be a part of the camaraderie.

{Program} This month we will make chemo hats for our charity program: Pediatric Cancer Patients.

The following patterns are suggested, but you may make any hat that will cover the head and ears (flaps or longer style folded hat) and is more tightly stitched to cover hair loss.

Youth sizes please.

Yarn should be soft to the skin as patients are covering delicate bare heads!

First off, I want to thank Kelly and Cori for doing an amazing job of putting together this years Christmas party. Then I would also like to thank everyone who helped with the setup and especially the tear down. That's what a guild is all about and I'm very proud to be a part of KS My Stitch. Christmas Party!

The December Guild meeting, 12/20/10 will be held in the same location as last year,

The Alford Branch Library http://www.wichita.lib.ks.us/Locations/Alford.htm.

Please bring a covered dish of your choice, either a main dish, vegetable, or dessert for our annual potluck dinner. We have 37 guild members this year, I hope all can attend.

There will be only one meeting: The dinner starts at 6:00 and ends at 8:00.

There will be a white elephant gift exchange. A white elephant gift is something that you do not use, but that is in nice condition and would be something someone else would love to receive as a gift. It can be an item that you make or supply/tool/book for example.
Please wrap your gift as we will be drawing numbers and the gifts are selected and unwrapped one at a time and the person next in line can either choose the gift opened prior to her turn, one that someone else opened earlier on, or choose an unopened gift. Gifts can only be selected/traded or "stolen" 2 times. This was fun to participate in last year and can be lots of laughs as we are many of us interested in similar items!

We will also be giving away door prizes, if you want to bring something: it is much appreciated, either a handmade item or supply or item someone would enjoy receiving, these do not have to be wrapped. We will also be installing the new officers for the upcoming year and celebrating with friends.

Tree House Charity Scarf and Sock Challenge Update

Dear Members and Friends,

We well exceeded our goal of 85 scarves and 85 pairs of socks for the Tree House. I'm so proud and excited to share with you our delivery of the 97 scarves and 127 pairs of socks to the lovely ladies at Tree House; Crystal and Renee were there to greet us and Crystal was kind enough to show us around their wonderful facility. Here are some of the hightlights of our trip to Tree House. Thank you to all who participated and made this a reality.

Crystal was shocked to find out that we had well over 85 scarves and socks to donate for their upcoming Christmas party.

We enjoyed meeting Crystal and Renee.

It was fun to see some of the KS My Stitch donated blankets that we had crocheted around.

This is one of their classrooms where they instruct the mother's on important things on how to care for their children. She showed us an art project that they had worked on and helped the mothers make their children aprons with their names painted on them.

Here's a group of volunteers that come in once a month to help with sorting the donated items. Crystal called them their Westlink ladies. It was very nice to meet all of them and Crystal pointed out that they are truly a blessing to the Tree House.

These are two more blessings to the Tree House; Barbara and Carl Patton. Barbara puts together 30 gift bags every month and donates them to the Tree House. What a blessing it was to meet her and Carl; they drive from McPherson, Kansas every month to donate 30 of these beautiful gift bags.

Barbara crochets 30 blankets, 30 sweaters, and 30 pairs of booties and places a bib, a pair of socks and a onesie in each of her giftbags. Here's a picture of the contents of one of her donated bags.

Crystal is explaining how the Tree House takes in donations and how they welcome volunteers too.

KS My Stitch November Charity Workshop

I want to extend a very special THANK YOU to all who have contributed to our special charity scarf and sock challenge for Tree House. You make me very proud to be associated with such a giving group of crocheters and knitters. I feel the same way as Rosina, I get tears of joy in my eyes to know that all of you have risen to the challenge of making this special charity project work. Thank you Susie for welcoming us into your beautiful Cedar Acre home and allowing us to just sit and crochet for the love of crocheting something for someone else. And an extra special THANK YOU to Korey; Susie's wonderful husband who helped me park my car and aired up my almost flat tire. I do appreciate it so much and so does my husband. So here are some highlights of our charity workshop last night.

Treehouse Project Update

Wow, there must have been at least 10 of us KS My Stitch members at Susie's house tonight for the Charity Workshop. What fun! There was as much laughter as there was hookin' going on.

And... are you ready for this? We now have 66 crocheted scarves for the project we have adopted this season. Wow! I am SOOOOO impressed with everyone who is participating in this. You are outdoing yourselves with the quality of your work and your generous donations of time, materials and talents. I get all teary-eyed to think of what you have accomplished in the short time since we learned of this goal. But I knew you could do it, never a doubt in my mind. Oh, and we have 58 pairs of ladies' socks contributed so far! Only 19 scarves and 27 pairs of socks to go.

You are a wonderful group, and I am proud to be a part of it. Keep up your efforts, ladies, we are almost at the finish line.

And a special thanks goes to Susie and her husband for putting up with a houseful of noisy, giggly women this evening. Susie, you are a super hostess.

Treehouse Project

2010 Retreat!

Just wanted to say thank you to Jinna for inviting us to her cabin. It was beautiful, relaxing, fun. Couldn't have asked for more perfect weather. And company. And food. Thank you also to Tamara for arranging it. You two are awesome, and I am so glad we got to spend some time together!

The views? To die for. And there were times I thought we were going to die laughing. Oh, My. Goodness.

Thanks for a wonderful meeting this month, Ladies! Our guild is growing, there are fewer empty seats at each meeting, it seems. That means more friends, more knowledge and more fun.

One tip this month was the idea that some of us crochet for technique or are process crocheters (we start lots of things, but don't produce many complete projects). Other's produce lots of finished goods and are project crocheters. I think Susan, who crochets tons of afghans is a project crocheter. What do you think?

You will need two high contrasting yarns, and please, no white, black or other really dark color yarn.

It will be much easier to work with a lighter yarn for your first attempt at this new technique.

For worsted weight, bring a G or H size hook.
For sport weight, F or G hook.
Kitchen cotton is also OK, bring appropriate hook.

Our July program is tapestry crochet. Shawna Jones, our guild member will be teaching us to make vases and has the following supply list and directions.

If possible, bring your completed base with you, directions are included on this email.

If you would like to join in on the swap this month we will be exchanging 2 coasters.

Here are supplies for some tapestry crochet in July;

2 contrasting colors of worsted weight yarn. Something firmly spun and sturdy, acrylics like Red Heart are a good choice to start with.
An E or F hook.

With one color make either base to work from for our vases;

Round Base:
Round 1: In magic loop, work 6 sc, do not join. Mark first stitch if you would like to keep track of rounds (6 sc)
Round 2: Work 2 sc in next 6 sc in the round (12 sc)
Round 3: Work /1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (18 sc)
Round 4: Work /2 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (24 sc)
Round 5: Work /3 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (30 sc)
Round 6: Work /4 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (36 sc)
Round 7: Work /5 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (42 sc)
Round 8: Work /6 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (48 sc)
Round 9: Work /7 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (54 sc)
Round 10: Work /8 sc, 2 sc in next stitch/ 6 times (60 sc)
Round 11, 12, & 13: Work 1 sc in each stitch (60 sc per round). Remember to work all three rounds.

Rectangular Base:

Row 1:Ch 21. Skip first ch, and sc in each chain across (20 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. 1 sc in each stitch across.

Repeat row two at 8 more times. You should now have a rectangular base that is 20 sc wide, and 10 sc rows tall.

You will now work around the outside of the rectangle with no turning or increasing. Work all the way around 1 sc in each stitch along the long edges, and 1 sc in each row on the sides (60 sc). Do not join. Continuing in spiral fashion, work 2 more rounds with 1 sc in each stitch (60 sc per round).

Crochet Guild Charity Workshop

Guild Members,

The Crochet Guild's Charity workshop will be held once a month on a Monday evening, one week after the Guild meeting from 6:30-8:30 PM (the fourth Monday of the month), at my home (10122 W Pawnee).

That being said, we will also meet sooner, on June 7th to catch up and get started. Then again on June 28th, as noted.

The plan is to have several different charities to work with during the year. Each charity will recieve 3- 4 months of our time and talent. We are starting with Baby blankets for "Tree house" http://www.wichitatreehouse.com/.

If you have suggestions for charity's to help please give me the info. at the next meeting or via email.

For this month here are some suggested supplies to bring:
A package of receiving blankets (wash at home first). I suggest some # 10 and 3 yarn for trimming it and a #1 and 10 steel hook.

You can also just make up some little crocheted blankets and or use fleece and trim with worsted weight yarn. They said all would be welcome.

Directions to my home: Take Kellogg to Maize road, turn South and travel 1 mile to Pawnee (Pizza Villa on corner), turn to the east (left) and it is the 2nd house on the left (north side). Big cedar trees and the street Crestline next to us. 10122 W Pawnee.

Susie Kilgroe~ Cedaracre Homestead

Hello everyone! I'm back at home and recovering from my hospital stay. Thank you everyone for the many prayers and good wishes that you've sent to me. I'm thankful everyday for all of my friends and hope that you all are doing well. I have nothing to report about why I had a pain that started below my breast bone and through to my back for 9 hours. None of their pain medications could stop it. The hospital did blood work, ran cat scans, and sonograms of all of my organs and they couldn't find anything wrong with me. So now I'm at home trying to cope with not knowing what's wrong with me. All I know is that I have my crochet and good friends to keep me company on my road to recovery and I feel truly blessed. Thank you for caring and I love you all.

Update on Tamara

I spoke with Jackie this morning and she informs me that Tamara will be released from the hospital later today and will be resting at home. I have no word of nature of illness, but good news that she is able to rest at home.
Keep her in your thoughts and prayers. I am sure she will send word via email to us when she feels well enough to visit.

Get Well Wishes for Tamara

Our fearless and fabulous President, Tamara Gonzales has become ill.

I have no specific details of her diagnosis, except that there is testing being done and at this time the doctors are not certain as to what is wrong. Tamara has had severe pain since Monday and is currently hospitalized.

Tamara's sister, Jackie Clark will keep us informed. Please keep Tamara and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Our guild is sending a card and flowers to wish her swift recovery and let her know she is loved.

Please leave comments here, or you may send email to Stephanie Macera at anothermakeover1@yahoo.com, and I will print and deliver to Tamara as soon as possible. I am told she needs rest and am not disclosing room or hospital information without Tamara's consent. I have not spoken to her, but Jackie has visited each day and will keep us up to date.

KS My Stitch March Meeting

Sorry this post is so late, here it is time for another meeting and I'm just now posting the pictures of our March meeting. Oh well, here goes. We had our usual brief business meetings. We discussed:

1. Procedure on becoming a member. Guests are asked to pay the annual dues of $25 after 2 visits.

2. KS My Stitch will be a guest exhibitor at the Prairie Quilt Guild Common Threads Quilt Show, June 25-27, 2010 at Century II. We will have forms for each item that you want to display in the booth. Please contact Stephanie Macera or Tamara Gonzales if you would like to display your crocheted pieces in the show.

3. KS My Stitch displayed some of our guild members crocheted items in the windows at Twist. Thanks to Stephanie Macera, Wendy McBride, and her friend Steph.

4. We had show and share, a yarn swap, door prizes, and treats. Thank you to everyone who brought treats and donated your lovely hand made or non hand made items for door prizes. Now on to the show and share pictures. I know that's what you came here for in the first place. Ha! Ha! Me too!

Karen embellished her purse with some doilies.

Linda C. made a beautiful lady bug doily and a red, black, and gray afghan that she plans on keeping for herself.

Lesa is making a giant granny square afghan.

Rosina made a few doilies and repaired a few doilies. She also made a set of crocheted bunnies that are so-o-o-o cute.

Joshua even joined us at the evening meeting to show us the afghan and hats he made. He didn't stick around but I was really glad he was able to stop by anyway.

Mary has been busy beading again. Beautiful angels and snowmen.

Donna got in on the hexagon baby jacket craze with me. I love how hers turned out.

Susan finished her hat afghan and allowed us to put it in the windows at Twist. We will also be displaying her afghan at the Quilt Show.

Jackie showed us her latest "Cute as a Button" baby jacket and she was modeling my adult size hexagon jacket.

April Meeting Reminder

We are excited to meet again on Monday April 19th at 10:00 a.m. to noon and again from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Twist.

Our program this month will be instruction on how to turn fiber into yarn using drop spindles. Spindles will be provided, however, please be sure to bring $2.50 to purchase fiber for this project.

Our hospitality crew this month is Kay Gruver and Karen Huskamp. Of course we welcome anyone to bring a food item they would like to share with others.

KS My Stitch Members Teach a Few Girl Scouts to Crochet

Look what some of the members did in their spare time. They went to Twist one of our LYS's and helped Shelly teach some Girl Scouts to crochet. I know this makes my heart proud when I see young people learning a craft that I love to do and I learned about the same age as some of these girls are. It brings back good memories and hopefully Jinna, Kelly, Sharon,and Susie left some good memories with the girls that they helped teach. Thank you to all that helped Shelly with the Girl Scouts, I'm proud of all of you and this makes me smile!!!! Here's Sharon.

March Program

This month we are learning to crochet with beads. I am excited about this program, you can never have enough bling! Can't wait to see what colors and beads everyone chooses.

Pam learned from experience in making the samples that black yarn or thread and beads are hard to work with. Pick light colors for the program.

You will need: Size 3 cotton or sport weight cotton, 125 pre-strung beads (size 8,6, E or for crochet thread, size 3 beads) appropriate size for your yarn and a size E hook (or appropriate for your yarn).

Hostesses are: Tamara Gonzales and Donna Dyer, you can also bring a treat or snack to share if you would like.

February Meeting Reminder

I am very excited to be making the practice sock that Pam has "downsized" for our February 15 meetings. For the meeting, bring sock yarn, size E hook and 2 stitch markers.

This should give you an idea of whether or not you would like to make the adult size shown in the pattern from Coats and Clarks.

Should anyone wish to make the actual sock(s), Pam Everhart has arranged for a crochet-a-long to be held at Twist on Saturday Feb. 20th from 10:30 to Noon and again on Saturday Feb. 27th from 10:30 to Noon.

Linda takes our breath away, yet again with another detailed and delicate center piece. Beautiful colors and wonderful work!

Our group keeps growing - this will be an exciting year~

I think it was a toss up this month as to who made/finished the most projects.. Rosina was a definitely in the running.

Possibly only beaten by Tamara! Look at those crochet buttons!

I love to see how many different things everyone is working on and what stage they are in!

OK, maybe Pam had the most, but some of it had been shipped before the evening meeting!

I show my plans for a wonderful doily I got as a door prize in November.. Started begging for more and Kelly so generously shared her door prize doily with me!

Cori got the prize for most stitches torn out and redone! Looks beautiful. Looking forward to more information on the crochet slippers class, Cori.

Linda brought her Tunisian crochet bead bracelet she made at the crochet-a-long. Lots of hard work and patience! Susie shares her green and white bag.

And here is where I will be you all to bear with me as I learn every one's names!

I hope coming to both meetings will make me quick to learn.

We all need to remember those name tags are important for our visitors (and those of us with short attention spans)!

I love the felted slippers and the beaded bag. Linda is hiding again under her beaded shawl.

At our January meeting, Pam Everheart showed us the pair of socks she made using RedHeart, Heart and Sole, self-striping yarn.
The pattern will also be provided to you at the February Guild meeting held at Twist, 607 W. Douglas on Mon. Feb. 15, 2010 from 10:00 a.m to Noon and again at the same location from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enter through the back doors.

KS My Stitch Christmas Party 2009

Wow, I can't believe another year has come and gone. The KS My Stitch Christmas Party was so much fun.

Thanks to Susie and

Jinna organizing the whole thing. Thank you to all that helped and made the party a success. I think everything was perfect and it was very relaxing for me to just sit back and enjoy myself as Jinna and Susie conducted the festivities.

The members started arriving with all of their white elephant gifts, door prizes, and dinner dishes. I do believe we could have fed 40 people with all the good food that everyone brought.

We had a brief meeting with the installation of officers and the new officers are from left to right:

Stephanie Macera (Secretary/Treasurer)
Tamara Gonzales (President)
Pam Everhart (Vice President)

Then we did a word search game with all crochet words in it of course.

Everyone was so generous with bringing door prizes and I think we had enough for everyone to win.

We also had a white elephant gift exchange and that's where you could participate if you wanted to or not. The rules were to bring a gift related to crochet that you would like to receive yourself. The first person chooses a gift from the table and the next person could either take the gift from the first person or choose another gift. One gift could only be taken twice. It was a lot of fun and I do believe Sheri finally ended up with the very cute crochet hat.

We also revealed who our secret pals were and that was a lot of fun seeing all the creative things that people made for their secret pals.

As Wendy promised, here are her recipes from last Monday's meeting. Thanks, Wendy, they were both delicious!

CRANBERRY SALSA
1 pkg fresh cranberries
1 - 8 oz can crushed pineapple
2/3 c sugar
1/2 green pepper
1/4 c fresh cilantro
2 Tbsp chopped onion
1/2 jalapeno seeded and chopped more if desired
1/4 tsp salt
Chop the green pepper, onion, cilantro, and jalapeno finely, then chop the cranberries in food processor. Add other ingredients, mix and chill for at least 2 hrs.

PUMPKIN MUFFINS
1 - 15 oz can pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie mix)
1 spice cake mix
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
Mix all together well, pour into paper muffin cups and bake.

Kim Guzman's class in Topeka

There were five of us signed up for the trip, but two canceled out at the last minute, so we three remaining gals all went in my car. We had a wonderful time! Arriving in Topeka a few minutes early, we found a cute little restaurant and ordered meals to go so we could eat in the car and not be late for our class. We had no trouble locating the building; Tracie, the leader of Topeka Crochet, met us at the door. Everyone was so friendly, and they even had a tableful of goodies for us to snack on. Kim Guzman is an excellent teacher, and took us step by step through all the stitches and the felting instructions we would need to complete our felted bags (Kim, I got impatient and finished felting mine in the washer). Everyone was friendly and welcoming and I even won a door prize of one of Kim's books!! And silly me forgot to have her sign it; I think I'll mail it to her with a SASE and a note begging her to sign it for me.

Needless to say, I am now hooked on Tunisian and can't wait to make more of these bags with my feltable yarn, then go on to try another pattern – maybe one from the book I won!

More information on Kim Guzman's class in Topeka!
This info is directly from Tracie at TopC, the CGOA chapter in Topeka:

When? - Sunday, October 11 at 2 p.m.
Where? - That will be determined on Monday.
Cost? - $10 + cost of materials (which each person has to bring with them). The project will be a small bag.
Open to Public? No, not in the sense that it will be advertised and anyone can just come in. It's for the members of Topeka Crochet & their guests, as well as the Wichita CGOA chapter. But exceptions can be made.
How to Register? Those attending need to register through me, so I can keep a head count. I've asked the members of Topeka Crochet to pay by Sunday's meeting on October 3rd, but it may be easier for those driving from Wichita to pay Kim when they get here. There needs to be at least 10 people attending for the class to take place, so I need to know ahead of time how many are coming.

Tracie NEEDS a head count by October 3!
It would be lots of fun to form a caravan from Wichita. If you want to attend the class, let me know. Rosina

Program: This month we were delighted to have Shelly Stilger, owner of Twist Yarn Shop, tell us all about felting. Shelly touched on needle felting briefly, then went on to explain the best yarns for felting, how and why the fabric felts, what you can do with your felted projects, how to block them, and much, much more!! Thank you, Shelly, for a very interesting and inspiring presentation. We had a total of 39 members and guests at both meetings agan this month; that is our second highest attendance. Wow, we had 39 members and guests at both meetings. Isn't that fabulous? And as usual we had tons of lovelies to drool over and admire. The program this month was Patriotic, so we made coasters, stars, flags, etc. with our red, white and blue yarns/threads. There was a wonderful collection of door prizes, "Thank You" to everyone who brought something! And shall we mention the food?? Lots and lots of yummy treats to please any taste — a big "Thank You" to those who brought food as well.
We all had a really fun time. Remember to let Tammy know if you want to sign up for the retreat this summer, and get your fee to her ASAP. Keep hookin', ladies and gentlemen, we love to see your projects!

Curried Couscous Salad with Dried Cranberries - June

1 1/2 c. uncooked couscous (about 1 - 10 oz. box) or I used Quinoa which is gluten-free.
1 c. dried cranberries (about 4 oz.)
1 c. frozen green peas (I used fresh that had been blanched)
1/2 tsp. curry powder
1/4 c. thinly sliced green onions (or red onions)
1/4 c. finely chopped fresh basil (I used dried this time so used less)
1 can chickpeas (garbanzo beans) drained (I used some that were dried and I cooked them)

Dressing:

1/3 c. lemon juice
1 tbsp. grated orange rind (I didn't put that in this time)
1 tbsp. water
1 1/2 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. thawed orange juice concentrate
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
4 garlic cloves, crushed

As you can see, this is not a super exact recipe! I think the dressing is the main thing to get right.
Couscous can be cooked by pouring 2 c. boiling water over it and letting it sit 5 minutes, fluffing with a fork. The quinoa has to be cooked but not long. Follow directions on the package. Assemble all ingredients, mix up dressing and combine. Let it chill for at least an hour to meld the flavors. It lasts in the refrigerator several days. (Unless it gets eaten!)

Chard and Cheese Pie - May

1-1/2 bunches Swiss Chard or Spinach (package of fresh). May use 10 oz. of frozen too.

2 c. cottage cheese
2 eggs, beaten
Juice of 1 lemon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 c. Parmesan cheese
1/2 c. bread crumbs or sesame seeds
Paprika

Wash chard, cut in bite-sized pieces. Cook quickly in heavy pan, add no water, stir constantly until wilted, drain very well. Preheat oven to 350. Beat together 1st 5 ingredients. Stir one cup of this into chard. Put into greased 9 x 9 pan (or double and use 9 x 13 pan) and press down firmly with fork. Spread remaining mixture evenly over top and sprinkle with bread crumbs and paprika. Bake 30 min. or until set. Let stand several minutes before cutting into squares and serving. May be eaten warm or cold.
